55 Best Non-Shedding Dogs (Small & Large Breeds)

If you would rather have the best large or small non-shedding dogs, you’ve come to the right place.

When it comes to pet parenting a dog, there are many factors you must not overlook.

The temperament, energy level, and diet are some common ones. In addition to those, you should also consider dog shedding.

Shedding is normal amongst dogs and other mammals like cats. However, it has its share of difficulties. While some pet parents don’t mind having dog fur all over, others do.

Therefore, there are many reasons shedding may not be in the best interest of dog owners, even health-wise.

This article will provide you with 55 of the best small and large non-shedding dogs you can consider.

Before that, you’ll get to know the reasons why dogs that don’t shed fur are good options as well as what to keep in mind about these canines.

Why Should You Go For Non-Shedding Dog Breeds?

As we mentioned, dog shedding isn’t objectively frustrating to everyone. But even those who don’t mind should be wary about it in some situations.

Fur shedding is more than an environmental issue. When a dog sheds, the dead hair gets everywhere.

This hair can ruin your pieces of furniture, clothing, and even curtains. Not to forget the extra bills you’d incur from vacuuming.

But the problem is more than bills and damaged goods. Shedding can be frustrating to allergic people.

Constant sneezing and sniffling are well-known symptoms, and they can make the affected person miserable.

You should go for dogs that don’t shed if you’re prone to allergies or if you’re not keen on having dog hair flying all over your home.

What You Should Know About Dogs That Don’t Shed

Dogs that don’t shed are usually termed hypoallergenic, a term that can become a misnomer if you would believe there’s a dog breed that can never cause allergies.

In truth, there are no perfectly hypoallergenic dogs. Shedding alone isn’t what triggers allergies. The dander and saliva sticking on the hair are the allergens, and all dogs produce this.

That said, non-shedding dog breeds are safer for allergy sufferers, which is why they are recommended. In that sense, we can view them as hypoallergenic dog breeds.

You should stay around your preferred dog breed for a while to be sure it won’t trigger your allergies as people are different.

Another piece of information to keep in mind is the significant difference between a low-shedding dog and a low-maintenance dog.

While it is assumed that a low shedder would be low maintenance, in many cases that isn’t true.

As we’ll soon see, a good number of these non-shedding dog breeds have high grooming needs.

It hasn’t changed much since then, especially in its role. This breed is a delightful companion who makes no enemies and has just friends.

The Toy Poodle is the smallest recognized size type and is made to be a companion.

But as you can imagine, many pet parents would rather hire a professional groomer than undertake the task themselves. Grooming the Shih Tzu’s coat is a herculean activity.

In personality, the nickname ‘little lion’ doesn’t do this breed any justice.

The Shih Tzu is an affectionate and outgoing family pet that goes along with kids as well as adults.

Some owners prefer trimming the coat, others keep it long for many reasons. Either way, grooming this breed is not child’s play.

In the household, the Lhasa Apso loves to play and is affectionate. However, it is also independent and even dignified.

This breed can be a good first-time dog, but you’d have to deal with some stubbornness.

However, as any hairstylist can testify, maintaining dreadlocks is a challenge. It looks like a medium-sized breed, but that’s mainly because of the hair.

The fanciful haircut of the Poodle sometimes makes it look like a trophy pet, but in actuality, the Standard Poodle is a worker at heart.

It began as a water retriever, and only the smallest version of this breed (the Toy Poodle) was bred solely to be a companion.

The Komondor had a more dignified profession, that of a protector of flocks. Due to the nature of its hairs, the Komondor doesn’t shed.

It doesn’t need to be brushed too, but that doesn’t make it low maintenance.

Komondor retains its guardian instincts and brings them into the 21st century.

This breed is highly protective and ever watchful, so you should be comfortable with a breathing mop keeping track of you every day.

While this protectiveness makes it a good guard dog, it should be trained not to attack strangers at a whim.

The African Hound, once revered and even thought to be a divine gift, is just as elegant as it used to be.

It is one of the most ancient dogs still existing today, and Arab tribesmen gave it the name el hor, which means noble.

Grooming this breed is certainly noble as it requires minimal effort, and it is a low shedder.

The Saluki does enjoy luxury but make no mistake, it is highly energetic and needs a lot of exercise. It is also quiet and likes its space, so expect affection quietly.

Also known as the Peruvian Hairless Dog, this rare dog breed is not for everyone.

The Peruvian Hairless Dog also has a coated variety, though rarer.

The Peruvian Inca is a friendly and cheerful companion that can make a good apartment dog as long as it gets enough outdoor exercise.

Make good provisions for this breed during extreme weather conditions.

The Irish Water Spaniel and the Poodle have a lot in common, from their looks to the low shedding coats.

Not surprisingly, they could be related. They certainly played the same role of being water retrievers.

The Irish Water Spaniel is less popular, however, and has a unique temperament.

This breed knows how to be quiet and only barks when it feels the need to. It is also playful and can sometimes be clownish.

This is why the Goldendoodle has fast become popular despite being a young designer breed.

The Poodle parent offsets the high shedding trait of the Golden Retriever, which was one of the breeders’ goals.

The Goldendoodle is suitable for different pet parents, both new and old.

This hybrid is a fantastic companion that’s affectionate and loving towards everyone. It is also highly intelligent.

The Belgian Malinois has a lot in common with the German Shepherd, and it should come as no surprise that both were employed as herders and currently work alongside law enforcement officers and even the military.

The German Shepherd sheds more than the Belgian Malinois, however. The latter also requires little grooming efforts.

The Belgian Malinois loves to work and thrives when it has activities to do.

This breed is not known to be aggressive, but some Malinois can be aloof towards strangers.

Though this breed has ‘terrier’ tied to its name, the Black Russian Terrier doesn’t belong to the Terrier Group.

It is a working dog that was developed to work with the Soviet army. Perhaps the Russians didn’t fancy having an army dog dropping dead hairs massively.

Whatever was the case, the Black Russian Terrier is a low shedder.

This breed is highly smart, but that’s to be expected from an army dog. It can be a problem for a civilian owner who isn’t able to cope.

It is confident, loyal, and is an excellent protector in the hands of a firm pet parent.

Fortunately, the coat rarely sheds. This breed has a high grooming need, though.

True to its herding nature, the Briard is protective and makes a good guardian. It is also loyal to its family members but would be reserved towards strangers.

It wasn’t bred to be a companion, however. The Viszla was a pointer and retriever. It is also a low shedder with a low grooming need.

That said, this breed is now a friendly and lively household pet.

It needs a lot of exercise to not get bored, and you should be comfortable with having a dog shadow you around.

The Bergamasco Sheepdog has the right mix of obedient companions and independent household pets, making it good for even busy owners.

You’d need to be firm with training, but it would be relatively easier than other bigger dogs because this breed is eager to please.

The Azawakh doesn’t shed, and the coat is very easy to groom. A simple brushing would do the trick most times.

The Azawakh is as loyal as it is independent. It is not the easiest dog to train, but it can learn.

This breed should be protected against the cold because its coat offers no winter coverage.

However, it is the truth. This breed hardly sheds but needs a lot of brushing to prevent its hair from tangling.

The Barbado da Terceira is an easygoing, loving, intelligent, and friendly dog breed that’s rare but still loved.

It may have issues with animal bullying (it is the bully) but you can socialize that trait away.

Bearded Collie is unusual in its shedding habits than all other ones we’ve seen so far.

Rather than being a non-shedder or a low-shedding dog, the Bearded Collie is a shedder. It is on this list because the dead hair doesn’t fall off its coat.

Instead, it gets trapped within, giving the impression of not having shed at all. While grooming, ensure you get rid of the dead hair.

Bearded Collies are enthusiastic, active, and alert. They make good companions and watchdogs.

The Greyhound also has a short, non-shedding coat that’s easy to groom.

Greyhounds are known to be friendly and affectionate, except with strangers.

They can be aloof towards people they don’t know until you bribe them with a treat. That’s sure to win them over.

The Xolo is usually hairless, but can also be coated. The shedding status and grooming need of the hairless variant should be obvious.

Xolo is calm and affectionate towards its family but can be aloof with strangers. You should take into account its high predatory instincts and protectiveness.

Without good training, Xolo can get aggressive.

Still ever imposing, the sight of this dog is enough to make an intruder think twice before proceeding.

This Argentinian dog breed has a short, low shedding coat that doesn’t pose any grooming difficulties.

Exercising and training are where the main challenges are.

The Bernedoodle comes in 3 sizes because of the Poodle parent, and can also be considered a hypoallergenic low shedding dog because of the Poodle.

However, as with other Poodle mixes, be sure to specify what you need. Some Bernedoodles are shedders.

This breed has that deceitful coat that looks like it would shed heavily but doesn’t. Even better, this breed is low maintenance.

As a household pet, the Berger Picard is a playful, goofy dog that warms the heart of adults and attracts kids.

Herding dogs are usually independent and stubborn, so expect that from this breed.

As a companion, this confidence can easily change to stubbornness. A lot of Hounds don’t shed, and the Bluetick is not an exception.

It is also easy to groom, much unlike some hounds like the Afghan.

The final dog on our list was developed to be a herder, but not like the protector that other herders are.

This breed had the task of tracking down and rounding up cattle to be butchered.

Such hard work needs some aggressiveness and energy, so it isn’t surprising that the Catahoula Leopard Dog can get aggressive.

The well-trained Catahoula isn’t aggressive towards humans, though.

The Catahoula Leopard Dog breed has a short, non-shedding, and easy-to-groom coat.

14 Best Large Hypoallergenic Dogs That Don’t Shed

FAQs

What is the smallest non-shedding dog?

There are a good number of small dogs that don’t shed or shed very little. These dogs are usually considered hypoallergenic to a large extent.

The Bichon Frise and Affenpinscher are some of the smallest non-shedding dogs.

What is the largest non-shedding dog breed?

There are many large non-shedding dogs that it would be difficult to pinpoint which is the largest.

That being said, some really large dogs that don’t shed are the Dogo Argentino, Briard, and Black Russian Terrier.

What is the calmest non-shedding dog breed?

Some non-shedding have a high exercise need and can be boisterous, others are calm and may even be inactive.

The Afghan Hound is one example of a calm non-shedding dog (though it is active). Here too, it is difficult to determine which dog is the calmest.

What is the most low-maintenance dog?

Not all non-shedding dogs are low shedders, but some are. Usually, the ones with short coats end up having a low grooming need.

There are too many of them to know which is the most low-maintenance dog, but you should know that the Azawakh and the Greyhound are good contenders.

Final Thoughts

It is enjoyable and sanitary to own a non-shedding dog breed, but that is just one part of the story.

Every dog has its challenges, so just because these dogs hardly shed does not mean you won’t encounter some difficulties.

Many are hard to groom, train and even exercise. While shedding can be a major factor in your decision, consider others too.

Also, realize that even dogs that are low shedders can start shedding as a symptom of some medical conditions. If your dog is experiencing hair loss, consult a veterinarian.
